June, 2017

Happy Summer Sycamore Dragon Families!

I hope your summer is going really well with spending time with your kids!  If we have not had the chance to meet yet, my name is Susanna Winstead, and I am honored to be the principal at your child’s school.  This is my sixth year as principal at Sycamore, my eleventh year as an administrator and my twenty-first year in education.  My husband, Brian, is also in education and together we have six wonderful children ranging in ages from thirteen to twenty-six and one grandbaby who turned one in the Spring.

Sycamore has earned the special recognition of being a No Excuses University school for the third year by continuing to demonstrate a commitment to college and career readiness.  In addition, we have been selected to present the development of our exceptional systems that we have in place at the No Excuses National Convention in Dallas, Texas in October. We have also successfully implemented the pillars of skills of independence that our students’ are striving to meet.   This is also our first year in establishing a Dual Immersion Spanish/English magnet program here at Sycamore.  We have a TK/K class and a K-1 class that will begin this year.  We will add the next grade each year after this until we get to fifth grade!

This year we will be having a Meet & Greet for families and teachers on Tuesday, August 15th from 2:15-2:45 in the afternoon.  We will have some punch and cookies in the center grass area just past the breezeway.  Our class lists will be posted on Friday, August 11th after 4:00pm, if you would like to check earlier for your child’s teacher’s name.  I know our students must be excited to see whose class they are in this year. The first day of school begins on Wednesday, August 16th!

School begins promptly at 7:45 am, with the cafeteria opening at 7:20 am, and supervision on the playground beginning at 7:25 am. Our dismissal time is 1:45 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday for 1st-5th grades.  Our Transitional K and Kindergarten students will be dismissed at 1:30. We will be continuing our Early Release Wednesdays, with dismissal at 12:50 for 1st-5th (12:45 for TK/K’s) with the exception of the FIRST WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16th WHICH IS A REGULAR DISMISSAL DAY; AND Wednesday, November 15th dismissal will be at 12:30 due to parent conferences and our last day of school, June 6th dismissal will also be 12:30.

Our Back to School Night this year will be held on Thursday, August 24th.  We are very excited about this year’s Back to School Night!  We will be having our “Academic Parent/Teacher Team” meeting (APTT). You will be receiving specific information about one goal area that your child needs to achieve by parent conference time and how you can assist your child in reaching this goal.  You will receive all the information and materials in order to assist your child. I know we can count on you to be here on this special night!  From 5:30-6:00pm we will have a free taco salad dinner and the “APTT” meeting will begin promptly at 6:10 pm-7:15 pm. If you have more than one child per grade level, it would be great if you can go to one grade meeting while your spouse/relative/friend can go to the other/s to receive the information and materials needed for each of your children. We also will be sponsoring the Scholastic Book Fair during this week, as well as being open the evening of Back to School Night!  This is a great, reasonably priced way to build your child’s home library of great books to read and to support your school.  Non-fiction books greatly support the content areas and provide rich vocabulary and interests!

As you continue to prepare for the beginning of the school year, please keep in mind the following:
